Renovating Tips

Renovating & Remodeling Ideas

Point Click Home gives you tips on how to make your kitchen remodeling project a complete success. Putting your kitchen in order can be done from the inside out. If you’re planning a kitchen makeover, questions will rise like stone or synthetic counters, Mahogany or Birchwood. There’s more to a successful kitchen design than finding solutions to these questions. Whether you invest in custom-built units or standard cabinetry, your kitchen is only as valuable as its insides. To maximize on storage space, take inventory.

Design director of Wood-Mode, John Troxell advises, “Think about items you store, or would like to store, in your kitchen. Group items by how you use them and where you want them accessible. Storage is about prioritizing your lifestyle.” With kitchen remodeling ideas such as stronger drawers and rollout shelves, we no longer need to look inside deep cabinets. Specialized inserts enable organization on every scale utilizing narrow spaces and wide ones. “Kitchen remodel” used to be synonymous with expansion, but we’ll show you how to add storage without square footage. Take these kitchen design ideas in mind:

  • Flip Your Lid–If you devote an entire cabinet to tall bottles, you’ll probably only have room for one shelf. Baker’s Paradise–A tambour appliance garage and wall oven turn this kitchen corner into a baking center.
  • Slim Line–Maximize shallow vertical space with innovations like tilt-out storage bins and a cutting board that drops down from the backsplash for use, revealing shelves.
  • Stay Sharp–Protect blades from dulling and keep them tucked safely away with a knife block pullout in the base cabinet.

Remodeling Tips from the Experts

Research finds that individuals looking to make home upgrades said they were looking to invest, on average, more than $11,000. These home remodeling projects were quoted for mostly kitchen and bath makeovers. Experts say that this is wise since kitchen and bath investments offer the best return when selling a home. Some tips to think about in order to make smart decisions when remodeling is to first think about how long you plan to stay in your home. For example, if you’re getting ready to sell, it’s probably best to avoid a big budget remodeling project. It would be a wiser choice to focus on smaller upgrades that prep your house for a good sale like a fresh coat of paint. However, if your plans are to stay in your home for a few years, a major investment will likely pay off. Before you start in on your home remodeling project, look at the market in your area and get a good feel for your home’s value. Do some research and inquire on what comparable homes are selling for because the last thing you want to do is price your home out of the neighborhood. Other popular remodeling projects include:

  • Landscaping and yard work
  • Painting inside or out
  • Flooring
  • Doors and windows
  • Decks and porches

This family reconciles their remodeling wish list along with reality. Homeowners had many different ideas for their kitchen remodeling project. First they wanted an open space that would also be separated from adjacent rooms. They threw their many ideas from magazine clippings in a gigantic album and settled on an African-Asian blend, with unfussy lines and natural, neutral colors. The old kitchen in their Oakland, California, home was a small space, isolated from the rest of the house.

Wish list: The couple envisioned adding a

  • A built-in refrigerator,
  • Multiple sinks,
  • A big-screen TV and lots of storage—but without too much visual clutter.

Reality

  • A bank of cabinets wrapped around the ovens and warming drawer compensate for the storage lost when the designers made the wall cabinets disappear.
  • Two sinks on generous swaths of counter top produce a kitchen where multiple cooks can function just as comfortably as one.
  • Getting rid of wall cabinets allowed the homeowners space for a big-screen TV and a piece of African artwork.

Remodeling Secrets from Pro’s

When it comes to renovating your home, Met Home’s favorite designers have valuable remodeling secrets for solving the toughest challenges faced. Take some of these tips into consideration to make the project a little easier.

  1. Time Saving Plaster—Our pros feel that even though luminous is beautiful, Venetian plaster should be used in order to save time and money.
  2. What a Ceiling—Most, when making home improvements, forget about their ceiling. Designer, Dan Barsanti, wants to change this. He applies dark wallpaper with a slight metallic luster to the ceiling in order to reflect light.
  3. Eco-Friendly Walls—Yet another genius idea from our designers is to create environmentally friendly walls. Room dividers and bathroom vanities are designed from ecoresin panels that encourage light flow between spaces. This material is lighter than glass, made of a nontoxic LEED standard material creating privacy with different levels of translucency.
