Designer unleashed a large dose of drama in their New York apartment. Miles Redd artfully uses materials and colors in this casual yet glamorous renovation by blending different eras and attitudes to create a very sophisticated home design. Designer, Miles Redd states, “I like to push the envelope—but just to the edge”, on his remodeling ideas.

The living room of the Manhattan apartment of Valerie Colas-Thibouville and her family; the home was renovated by Dick Bories and James Shearron and decorated by Miles Red. The custome-made sofa and throw pillows are covered in a Clarence House linen and velvet, respectively, the Oushak rug is antique, and the Louis XVI-style bergere is from Todd Alexander Romano, the porcelain vase, Chinese table lamp, and antique cocktail table are all from John Rosselli Antiques and Decorations. The trio of artworks is by Jean-Louis Forain, the window treatments are of a Kravet silk with Lee Jofa silk trim, and the walls are sheathed in red felt.

Celebrated chef Giada De Laurentiis has teamed with Target on an eponymous line of kitchenware, stainless-steel and cast-iron cookware, and Italian foods. Choose glazed (it has a glasslike finish), unglazed (it has a more rough-hewn look), or porcelain. Styles seem infinite: from Spanish and far Eastern motifs to abstract art pieces, elaborately carved squares to sleek subway tiles. Consider laying basic square tiles in a diamond or brick pattern, suggests Gilmer. You can also play with scale. Gilmer likes to cut oversize, 24-inch-square tiles to fit a small area: “Whereas tiny tiles can look busy, larger tiles help open up the space,” she explains. Aside from sealing tiles and grout twice a year to protect against stains, ceramic tile is easy to care for — it wipes clean with soap and water.
